Nurturing
Excellence
The criterion
of measuring excellence is the medals/
championships won at different competitions,
particularly international and national
championships. The main clientele group of
SAG which is targeted for nurturing
excellence is under 19 age group, mainly
schoolgoing boys and girls. The following
analysis is made on the basis of medals as
well as participation. In the international
competitions, the SAG’s main contribution is
in coaching while the Commissioner of Youth
Services offers financial assistance.
-
National Championships
Domestically, the SAG enables Gujarat
school children and sports persons in
five main national forums, namely the
SGFI Games (School Games Federation of
India), the National Rural Games (organised
by the Sports Authority of India), the
National Women’s Sports Festival (organised
by the Sports Authority of India), the
Subroto Mukherjee Cup for football (organised
by the Subroto Mukherjee Sports
Education Society sponsored by the
Indian Air Force Sports Control Board)
and the Jawaharlal Nehru Cup for hockey
(organised by J. L. Nehru Hockey
Tournament Society). The SGFI and the
Subroto and Nehru Cup tournaments are
for schools children only (Under 19 age
group). The Rural and the Women games
are not school- based, but are open.
However, the Rural Games are for
under-17 age group only whereas Women’s
Sports Festival has no age bar.
