Sports Authority of Gujarat
-
Strategy - Specific Performance
This chapter
is intended to give an outline of the extent
to which the efforts to realise the policy
objectives have been successful.
The Gujarat sportsperson is the
justification and therefore is at the centre
of all the objectives and the strategies of
the SAG. However, it is the under 19 age
group that is the main focus of the SAG.
There are many independent sports
associations with national and regional
affiliates, which conduct a variety of
tournaments, as well as coaching activity in
the state. For instance, the Gujarat Cricket
Association, an affiliate of the BCCI
conducts its own tournaments in the open
(without age restrictions) as well as age
group related circuits. The Commissioner of
Cultural and Youth Activities also conducts
state level tournaments for under 19 age
group. The SAG’s strategic role therefore is
confined to identification and coaching of
talented school children. It involves a)
creating a state-wide conducive atmosphere
for the culture of sports to take root and
thrive; b) identify talent through
scientific methods to be trained in sports
hostels and c) nurture and promote
excellence through coaching and other
support services aimed at sportsmen. Chart 3
contains a graphic representation of the
main strategic elements of the SAG.
A certain amount of repetition of the text
is unavoidable since the strategy is related
to the objectives. However this chapter may
offer a useful idea of the strategic efforts
is put in by the SAG.
