Sports Authority of Gujarat
Excellence in
sports largely depends on the value the
local communities place on sports and the
resources and efficiency of the coaching
institutions. As compared to other States,
local communities in Gujarat do not seem to
place relatively higher value on excellence
in sports, as they seem to perceive the
opportunity cost of time and energy to be
much greater. It has to be noted that the
demand for sporting excellence will be made
during the child's formative years and
precisely at this stage there are
competitive demands on the child's time and
energy for excellence in studies. Without a
very high academic percentage, the child is
unlikely to get admission in engineering
that coaches invest three to four years of
intensive coaching in a promising child but
when the final thrust is required, the child
has to abandon all extra curricular
activities and concentrate on his studies
for Board Examinations. This is a major
constraint faced by most coaching
institutions in promoting excellence.
In view of general ban on recruitment, a
significant number of coaches had remained
unfilled or vacant. While efforts to
popularise a culture of sports have been
strengthened and borne some fruit so that
there is participation of boys and girls in
sports activities, the number of coaches per
100 trainees has actually declined. Budget
for Sports for the year 2006-07 has been
significantly increased by the Govt.
SAG has been trying to develop sports
infrastructure in assocation with local
agencies such as collector, Municipal
Commissioner or private sponser. In the year
2006-07 Rs.734 lacs were provided to
construct district sports complex in 10
district at an estimated cost of Rs.2209.67
lacs.
A state of the
art Sports complex with facility of indoor &
outdoor game in under construction at
Khokhara(Maninagar) Ahmedabad, at an
estimated cost of Rs.302 lacs, for which
around Rs.90 lacs have been spent after this
project. Last year a National event like
National School Games in two disciplines
Skating and Tennis were successfully
organised at Ahmedabad.
The success also imposes a greater
expectation not only to maintain the level
of success but also to improve upon it
within the systematic constraint mentioned
above. The SAG is hoping to maintain the
efforts to succeed and improve mainly on the
strength of the experience on the regular
coaches and help of the local institutions.
